In 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency established a landmark law that requires residential buildings (including Homeowners Associations and Apartments) built before 1978, such as Yosemite Village, to be tested for the presence of lead paint prior to performing a variety of improvement projects, including window replacement. If work is conducted without this lead test, all parties risk substantial monetary fines. The goal of this law is to reduce the risk of lead poisoning, which is particularly a concern for young children.
If your building has been determined to have lead above the allowable level, the work must be completed by an EPA Certified Renovator. This includes your in-house crews, maintenance workers and contractors. Certified Renovators have taken and passed a course that qualifies them to follow lead-safe practices and perform the required work in accordance with the law.
